The Second Boer War was a conflict fought from 11 October 1899 to 31 May 1902 between the British Empire and the Boer republics of the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State over Britain's influence in Southern Africa, sparked in part by an influx of mostly British Uitlanders drawn to the Witwatersrand Gold Rush. The war ended in a British victory, and the Treaty of Vereeniging dissolved the Boer republics into the British Empire. The former republics were transformed into the British colonies of the Transvaal and Orange River, and in 1910 were merged with the Natal and Cape Colonies to form the Union of South Africa, a self-governing colony within the British Empire. British expeditionary efforts were aided significantly by colonial forces from the Cape Colony, the Natal, Rhodesia, and many volunteers from the British Empire.
