The Lee-Metford was a bolt action rifle developed for the British Army by combining James Paris Lee's rear locking bolt action with William Ellis Metford's seven groove rifled barrel, and manufactured by the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield. It was the first British bolt action service rifle, adopted in 1888 to replace the Martini-Henry as the standard arm of the British Empire, with production running from 1884 to 1896 before it was superseded in turn by the Lee-Enfield.
