The Second Boer War was a conflict fought from 11 October 1899 to 31 May 1902 between the British Empire and the Boer republics of the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State over Britain's influence in Southern Africa, sparked in part by an influx of mostly British Uitlanders drawn to the Witwatersrand Gold Rush. The war ended in a British victory, and the Treaty of Vereeniging dissolved the Boer republics into the British Empire.
