The M3 half-track is an American armored vehicle that combined a conventional steered front wheel axle with a rear set of continuous tracks, developed in 1940 and 1941 to give infantry, weapons crews and headquarters units a vehicle that could keep pace with tanks across rough terrain while offering better mobility than a purely wheeled truck and lower cost and complexity than a fully tracked armored vehicle. The United States and its allies built tens of thousands of M3 half-tracks and its variants during the Second World War, using the basic chassis as an armored personnel carrier, an ambulance, a command vehicle and a mobile weapons platform mounting machine guns, anti-aircraft guns or light artillery pieces. Its combination of reasonable off-road mobility, ease of mass production and light armor protection against small arms and shell fragments made the half-track one of the most widely produced and versatile American armored vehicle families of the war, serving in every major theater in which American ground forces fought.
