The 2026 Iran war is a war between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran and its regional allies on the other, under way since 28 February 2026. It followed the Twelve-Day War of June 2025 and sporadic fighting during the wider Middle Eastern crisis sparked by the Gaza war. It began while US and Iranian negotiations over Iran's nuclear program were continuing, when the United States and Israel carried out hundreds of air strikes on targets across Iran, including strikes that assassinated Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several other Iranian officials. The American rationale included regime change and preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, while critics reject these justifications and describe the attack as a war of aggression.
