Bosnian War

Contemporary

The Bosnian War was fought from 1992 to 1995 following Bosnia and Herzegovina's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia, and it became the deadliest of the wars accompanying Yugoslavia's breakup, as Bosnian Serb forces backed by Serbia fought against Bosniak and Croat forces amid widespread ethnic cleansing. The conflict included the prolonged siege of the capital Sarajevo and, in July 1995, the massacre of thousands of Bosniak men and boys at Srebrenica by Bosnian Serb forces, later judged genocide by international courts. NATO airstrikes against Bosnian Serb military positions in 1995 helped bring the warring parties to the negotiating table, and the Dayton Agreement, signed in December 1995, ended the war and established the postwar political structure of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Following the Slovenian and Croatian secessions from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991, the multi-ethnic Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina - which was inhabited by mainly Muslim Bosniaks (44%), Orthodox Serbs (32.5%) and Catholic Croats (17%) - passed a referendum for independence on 29 February 1992.
  • Lead section
Following several earlier violent incidents, the war is commonly seen as having started on 6 April 1992 when the newly independent Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina was internationally recognized. It ended on 21 November 1995 when the Dayton Accords were initialed.
  • Assessment section
On the one hand, the war could be viewed as "a clear-cut case of civil war, that is, of internal war among groups unable to agree on arrangements for sharing power".
  • Article text
Estimates suggest over 100,000 people were killed during the war.
