Bosnian War

The Bosnian War was fought from 1992 to 1995 following Bosnia and Herzegovina's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia, and it became the deadliest of the wars accompanying Yugoslavia's breakup, as Bosnian Serb forces backed by Serbia fought against Bosniak and Croat forces amid widespread ethnic cleansing. The conflict included the prolonged siege of the capital Sarajevo and, in July 1995, the massacre of thousands of Bosniak men and boys at Srebrenica by Bosnian Serb forces, later judged genocide by international courts. NATO airstrikes against Bosnian Serb military positions in 1995 helped bring the warring parties to the negotiating table, and the Dayton Agreement, signed in December 1995, ended the war and established the postwar political structure of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
