The Type 81 is a Chinese selective-fire, gas-operated assault rifle chambered in 7.62x39mm, designed by Wang Zijun and adopted by the People's Liberation Army in 1981. It replaced the semi-automatic Type 56 carbine as China's standard service rifle and formed a small arms family that included the Type 81, the Type 81-1 carbine variant, and the Type 81 light machine gun. The rifle saw heavy service through the 1980s, notably during the Sino-Vietnamese border conflicts, and was produced by Chinese state arsenals and marketed abroad by Norinco, with production continuing under license in Bangladesh.
