Ifni War

The Ifni War, known in Spain as the Forgotten War, was a conflict between Spain and Moroccan insurgents that began in November 1957 with armed incursions into the Spanish West African territories of Ifni and Spanish Sahara. After Morocco's 1956 independence, its government sought to reclaim Spain's remaining territories in the region, and the Moroccan Army of Liberation, backed by allied Sahrawi tribes, attacked Spanish positions and besieged the city of Sidi Ifni. Spanish troops withdrew from most of the surrounding territory but held the city itself, resupplied by the Spanish Navy, while a joint Spanish-French offensive in February 1958 drove Moroccan forces out of Spanish Sahara. The war ended with the Treaty of Angra de Cintra in April 1958, under which Spain ceded Cape Juby and most of Ifni to Morocco while retaining Sidi Ifni itself until 1969.
