The BT tank was one of a series of Soviet light tanks produced in large numbers between 1932 and 1941, lightly armored but reasonably well armed for their time and possessing the best mobility of any contemporary tank. Known by the nicknames Betka and Betushka after their Russian acronym, the BT tanks were succeeded by the T-34 medium tank introduced in 1940, which replaced all of the Soviet Union's fast, infantry, and light tanks then in service.
