The HK416 is a German assault rifle chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge, designed and manufactured by Heckler & Koch. Although built on the AR-15 and M16 rifle platform, it replaces the direct impingement gas system with a proprietary short stroke gas piston system derived from the G36 rifle family. It entered service in 2004 and gained wide recognition after United States Army Delta Force adopted it, with the United States Marine Corps later fielding a variant as the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle. It has since been adopted by numerous military and special operations forces, including the Norwegian Armed Forces, the French Armed Forces and the German Army.
