Heckler and Koch G36

The Heckler and Koch G36 is a German assault rifle designed by Heckler and Koch between 1991 and 1995 and accepted into service with the Bundeswehr in 1997. It is chambered in 5.56 by 45 millimeter NATO and operates with a short stroke gas piston and a closed rotating bolt, firing at about 750 rounds per minute from a 30 round detachable box magazine that can be paired with a 100 round drum. It has an effective range of about 600 meters and has been adopted by more than 40 countries since entering production in 1996. Germany has announced plans to replace the G36 with the HK416, designated G95A1, with fielding expected to begin in 2026.
