The M1917 Enfield, known as the American Enfield and formally titled United States Rifle, caliber .30, Model of 1917, is an American adaptation of the British .303 inch Pattern 1914 Enfield rifle, produced from 1917 to 1919 and chambered for the .30-06 Springfield cartridge. It served as the principal rifle of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during the First World War. The Danish Sirius Dog Sled Patrol still uses the M1917 in Greenland because of its reliability in Arctic conditions.

Why did the United States field a British-designed rifle instead of making more Springfield M1903 rifles?

Adapting the British Pattern 14 was judged much quicker than re-tooling its factories to build the M1903.

When the United States entered the First World War it urgently needed rifles. The Springfield Armory had delivered about 843,000 M1903 Springfield rifles, but production was difficult, and re-tooling the factories that had been making the British Pattern 14 rifle to build the M1903 would have been slow. It was judged much quicker to adapt the British design instead. The design was changed to the American .30-06 Springfield cartridge to simplify ammunition logistics, and the result was formally adopted as the U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, Model of 1917.
