M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle

The M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle is a 5.56 millimeter select fire weapon that Heckler and Koch developed from its HK416 platform, formally adopted by the United States Marine Corps in the summer of 2010 to replace the M249 squad automatic weapon and, later, the M16 and M4 rifles at the individual squad level. It saw its first combat in the War in Afghanistan and later in operations against the Islamic State during the Syrian Civil War. By December 2017 the Marine Corps had decided to issue an M27 to every member of an infantry squad, a policy that reached full operational capability by mid-2021.
