The Lee-Metford was a bolt action rifle developed for the British Army by combining James Paris Lee's rear locking bolt action with William Ellis Metford's seven groove rifled barrel, and manufactured by the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield. It was the first British bolt action service rifle, adopted in 1888 to replace the Martini-Henry as the standard arm of the British Empire, with production running from 1884 to 1896 before it was superseded in turn by the Lee-Enfield. Why did the Lee-Metford have such a short career as Britain's main rifle?
It was adopted in 1888 and overshadowed by the Lee-Enfield from 1895.
The Lee-Metford was adopted in 1888, although it had actually entered production back in 1884. It was meant to fire a new cordite-based cartridge, but that cartridge went through a long development, so black powder was used instead. The rifle was then overshadowed fairly quickly by the Lee-Enfield marks that began to appear in 1895.
