The TKB-022PM was an experimental Soviet bullpup assault rifle designed by German Korobov at TsKIB SOO in an effort to find a compact, fully automatic replacement for the AKM. It used an unusual vertically moving bolt and a U shaped extractor that allowed ambidextrous firing, and versions were built in 1962, 1965 and 1968 chambered in 7.62x39mm and later 5.6x39mm. Field tests showed it was more accurate than the AKM and it achieved an unusually compact overall length of 525 millimeters with a 415 millimeter barrel, but the Soviet military rejected the design over concerns about its mechanical complexity and the durability of its plastic housing.
