The American Revolutionary War (1775 to 1783) was fought between Great Britain and its Thirteen Colonies, organized as the Continental Army under George Washington. France entered on the American side in 1778, followed by Spain, and the decisive Franco-American victory at the siege of Yorktown in 1781 brought Britain to the negotiating table. The 1783 Treaty of Paris recognized the independence of the United States.
