Serbian Army

Modern

The Serbian Army (Kopnena vojska Srbije) is the land-based and largest component of the Serbian Armed Forces. Its organization and equipment are adapted to operations on land. The army traces its origin to 1830 as the Army of the Principality of Serbia and was later renamed the Royal Serbian Army. After the First World War it was incorporated into the Royal Yugoslav Army and after the Second World War became the Yugoslav Ground Forces of the Yugoslav People's Army. In its present form it has been active since 2006 when Serbia restored its independence. It consists of six brigades and six independent battalions under the Army Command and is also tasked with securing the Ground Safety Zone along the administrative line with Kosovo.
