The United States Armed Forces are the military forces of the United States. Federal law establishes six armed forces: the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard, each assigned specific roles and operational domains. Except for the Coast Guard, which operates under the Department of Homeland Security in peacetime, the services are organized under the Department of Defense. The Army and the Navy were established during the American Revolutionary War, with the Continental Army dated to 14 June 1775, and the other services followed later. The National Security Act of 1947 created the Department of Defense, the Air Force and the National Security Council, and the Space Force was established in 2019 as the newest branch. The president serves as commander-in-chief.
