The Luftwaffe was the air arm of the German Wehrmacht before and during World War II. Germany's earlier military flying services, the Luftstreitkraefte of the Imperial Army and the naval flying detachments, were disbanded in May 1920 under the Treaty of Versailles, which forbade Germany an air force at all. Pilots were trained in secret in the Soviet Union during the interwar years, and the Luftwaffe was officially established on 26 February 1935, shortly before open German rearmament was announced. The Condor Legion, a detachment sent to help the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War, gave it a testing ground for aircraft and tactics, and by September 1939 it was among the most advanced and combat-tested air forces in the world. It also ran the Fallschirmjaeger paratroop arm and was disbanded after Germany's defeat.
