The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 was fought in August and September 1965, beginning after Pakistan launched Operation Gibraltar, infiltrating forces into Indian-administered Kashmir in an attempt to incite a local uprising, which instead led to open warfare between the two countries, including large tank engagements in the Punjab region such as around Chawinda. After roughly three weeks of intense but inconclusive fighting, the war ended in stalemate under pressure from the United Nations Security Council, formalized by the Soviet Union-mediated Tashkent Declaration of January 1966, in which both sides agreed to withdraw to their pre-war positions.
