Fighting began in February 1899 near Manila and, after American forces defeated the conventional Filipino army, shifted into a prolonged and brutal guerrilla insurgency across much of the archipelago, met by harsh American counterinsurgency measures including forced relocation of civilians into fortified zones. Aguinaldo's capture in March 1901 broke the back of organized resistance, and the United States declared the war officially over in July 1902, although fighting by remaining Filipino guerrilla bands and religiously motivated resistance groups continued in some regions for several more years. The war left the Philippines under American colonial administration until independence was finally granted in 1946.FactsPhilippine-American WarConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsStart YearWell-attested1899 2End YearWell-attested1902 2CombatantsWell-attestedUnited States against Filipino nationalists led by Emilio Aguinaldo 2OutcomeWell-attestedThe war lasted three years and resulted in the deaths of over 4,200 American and over 20,000 Filipino combatants, with as many as 200,000 Filipino civilians dying from violence, famine and disease. 2ClassificationConflict TypeWell-attestedInsurgency or Counterinsurgency 1Philippine-American WarFilter Results9 entriesWeapon FamilyAllAmmunition and Cartridges (1)Bolt-Action, Lever-Action and Historic Rifles (3)Pistols and Revolvers (4)Revolvers (3)Rifles and Carbines (3)Semi-Automatic Pistols (1)Semi-Automatic Pistols of the United States (1)Shotguns (1)Weapon Type or ClassAllBolt-action rifle (2)Breech-loading rifle (1)Pump-action shotgun (1)Revolver (1)Semi-automatic pistol (1)Service revolver (sidearm) (1)small arm (2)CaliberAll.22 Long Rifle (1).30-06 Springfield (1).30-40 Krag (1).32 S&W (1).32-20 Winchester (1).357 Magnum (1).38 S&W (1).38 Special (1).44 Russian (1).44 S&W American (1).44 Special (1).44-40 Winchester (2).45 ACP (1).45 Colt (2).45 Schofield (1)12-gauge (1)140mm (1)16-gauge (1)7x57mm Mauser (2)Introduced EraAll1867 (1)1869 (1)1870 (1)1873 (1)1892 (1)1893 (1)1897 (1)1898 (1)1903 (1)1911 (1)Service StatusAllIn Service (3)Retired (6)OperatorAllArgentine Armed Forces (1)Australian Defence Force (1)Canadian Armed Forces (2)Mexican Armed Forces (1)Royal Air Force (1)Royal Navy (2)Spanish Armed Forces (1)United States Armed Forces (3)United States Army (1)United States Marine Corps (1)ManufacturerAllColt's Manufacturing Company (3)Mauser (1)Remington Arms (1)Smith & Wesson (1)Springfield Armory (1)Winchester Repeating Arms Company (1)BrowseCompareSelect all 9Colt New ServicePhilippine-American WarColt Single Action ArmyPhilippine-American WarM1911 PistolPhilippine-American WarMauser Model 1893Philippine-American WarRemington Rolling Block RiflePhilippine-American WarSmith & Wesson Model 3Philippine-American WarSpringfield M1903 RiflePhilippine-American WarSpringfield Model 1892-99Philippine-American WarWinchester Model 1897Philippine-American WarConnectionsCommanders and ForcesUnited States Army, Armed Forces and Units Well-attested The United States Army fought Filipino revolutionary forces in the 1899-1902 Philippine-American WarUsesCavalry Sabre, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Sabretier 2Colt New Service, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Colt New ServiceColt Single Action Army, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Colt Single Action Armytier 2Gatling Gun, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Gatling Guntier 4M1911 Pistol, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: M1911 pistoltier 4Mauser Model 1893, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Mauser Model 1893Remington Rolling Block Rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Remington Rolling Block rifleSmith & Wesson Model 3, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Smith & Wesson Model 3Springfield M1903 Rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: M1903 Springfieldtier 4Springfield Model 1892-99, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Springfield Model 1892-99 (Wikipedia)Winchester Model 1897, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Winchester Model 1897In the Other AtlasesAlso in History Atlas: Philippine-American War, the same subject.Sources1.
