The cavalry sabre, a curved backsword for mounted cutting attacks, saw extensive military use in the early 19th century, when Napoleon used heavy cavalry charges to great effect. Britain's 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Sabre became the most famous pattern of the era, known for cutting power severe enough to sever a limb.
