As a blue-water navy it operates significantly in the Persian Gulf region, the Horn of Africa and the Strait of Malacca, and routinely conducts anti-piracy operations with other navies in the region. Its origins date to 1612, when an English vessel under Captain Thomas Best defeated the Portuguese at the Battle of Swally, and when India became a republic on 26 January 1950 the Royal prefix was dropped and the name Indian Navy was officially adopted. Its primary objective is to safeguard the nation's maritime borders and to deter or defeat threats, in war and peace, and since October 2008 it has kept at least one frontline warship on continuous deployment in the Gulf of Aden.FactsIndian NavyConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsForce TypeWell-attestedNaval branch of the Indian Armed Forces 1Founded YearWell-attested1950 1CountryWell-attestedIndia 1Force TypeForce Type (category)Well-attestedNavy 1Indian NavyFilter Results14 entriesWeapon FamilyAllAir-to-Air Missiles (2)Anti-Ship and Anti-Submarine Missiles (3)Assault Rifles (1)Assault Rifles of Russia and the Soviet Union (1)Ballistic Missiles (2)Ballistic Missiles of India (2)Bolt-Action, Lever-Action and Historic Rifles (1)Cruise Missiles (1)Early Modern Sailing Warships (1)Fighter and Multirole Aircraft (2)Rifles and Carbines (2)Torpedoes (1)Weapon Type or ClassAllAnti-ship cruise missile (1)Anti-ship missile (1)Assault rifle (1)Beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (2)Bolt-action rifle (1)Cruise missile (1)Fighter aircraft (1)Heavyweight anti-submarine torpedo (1)Hypersonic anti-ship missile (1)missile (1)Multirole fighter (1)Submarine-launched ballistic missile (1)type of warship (role and size vary by era) (1)CaliberAll.22-250 Remington (1).222 Remington (1).223 Remington (1).243 Winchester (1).270 Winchester (1).30-06 Springfield (1).300 Winchester Magnum (1).308 Winchester (1)6.5x55mm (1)7.62x39mm (1)7.62x51mm NATO (1)7mm Remington Magnum (1)7mm-08 Remington (1)Introduced EraAll1968 (1)1973 (1)1975 (1)1983 (1)1994 (2)1996 (1)2001 (1)2006 (1)2016 (1)2018 (1)2019 (1)2024 (1)Service StatusAllIn Service (10)Retired (1)Wars Used InAll2025 India-Pakistan Conflict (1)Eighty Years' War (1)Eritrean-Ethiopian War (1)Falklands War (1)Gulf War (1)Iran-Iraq War (1)Iraq War (1)Russo-Ukrainian War (1)Syrian Civil War (2)War in Afghanistan (2001-2021) (1)ManufacturerAllAérospatiale (1)Bharat Dynamics Limited (3)Dassault Aviation (1)Defence Research and Development Organisation (2)Kalashnikov Concern (1)MBDA (2)Mikoyan (1)NPO Mashinostroyeniya (1)NPO Novator (1)SAKO (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 14AK-103Indian NavyAstra (missile)Indian NavyDassault RafaleIndian NavyExocet MissileIndian NavyFrigateIndian NavyK Missile FamilyIndian NavyK-4 (missile)Indian NavyKalibr (missile family)Indian NavyLRAShM (missile)Indian NavyMICA (missile)Indian NavyMiG-29Indian NavyP-70 AmetistIndian NavyTikka T3Indian NavyVarunastra TorpedoIndian NavyConnectionsFought InIndo-Pakistani War of 1965, Wars Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Indian Navytier 4Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, Wars Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Indian Navytier 4Kargil War, Wars Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Indian Navytier 4Sino-Indian War, Wars Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Indian Navytier 4OperatesAK-103, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: AK-103Astra (missile), Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Astra (missile)Dassault Rafale, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Dassault Rafaletier 4Exocet Missile, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Exocet Missiletier 4Frigate, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: FrigateK Missile Family, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: K Missile familyK-4 (missile), Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: K-4 (missile)Kalibr (missile family), Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Kalibr (missile family)LRAShM (missile), Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: LRAShM (missile)MICA (missile), Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: MICA (missile)MiG-29, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: MiG-29tier 2P-70 Ametist, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: P-70 AmetistTikka T3, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Tikka T3Varunastra Torpedo, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Varunastra (torpedo) - WikipediaIn the Other AtlasesFound InIndiaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject is found.Sources1.
