The federal Nigerian military government under General Yakubu Gowon launched a military campaign to crush the secession, and the resulting war, combined with a federal blockade of Biafran territory, produced a severe famine that killed large numbers of civilians and drew international humanitarian attention and relief efforts to the besieged region. Biafran resistance gradually collapsed under sustained federal military pressure and the effects of the blockade, and the war ended in January 1970 with Biafra's surrender and its reincorporation into a reunified Nigeria under a policy Gowon described as no victor, no vanquished. The conflict remains one of the deadliest civil wars in post-colonial African history.FactsNigerian Civil WarConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsStart YearWell-attested1967 1End YearWell-attested1970 1CombatantsWell-attestedNigeria; Biafra 1OutcomeWell-attestedNigerian victory 1ClassificationConflict TypeWell-attestedCivil War 1Nigerian Civil WarFilter Results14 entriesWeapon FamilyAllArmored Cars and Reconnaissance Vehicles (1)Assault Rifles (1)Assault Rifles of Europe (1)Autocannons and Chain Guns (1)Bolt-Action, Lever-Action and Historic Rifles (2)General-Purpose and Medium Machine Guns (1)Infantry Fighting Vehicles and Armored Personnel Carriers (1)Light Machine Guns (1)Rifles and Carbines (5)Semi-Automatic and Battle Rifles (2)Submachine Guns (2)Weapon Type or ClassAllAnti-tank recoilless gun (1)Armored fighting vehicle (1)Armoured car (1)Assault rifle (1)Autocannon (1)Battle rifle (1)Bolt-action rifle (1)bolt-action, magazine-fed repeating rifle (1)Field gun / gun-howitzer (1)General-purpose machine gun (1)Light machine gun (1)Semi-automatic rifle (1)Submachine gun (2)CaliberAll.30-06 Springfield (1).303 British (2)20mm (1)7.5x54mm (1)7.5×54mm French (1)7.62x25mm (1)7.62x39mm (1)7.62x51mm NATO (5)7.62x54mmR (1)7.62×25mm Tokarev (1)7.65x53mm Argentine (1)7.92x57mm Mauser (1)87.6mm (1)9x19mm (2)9×19 mm Parabellum (2)Introduced EraAll1895 (1)1914 (1)1915 (1)1936 (1)1940 (2)1941 (1)1948 (1)1949 (1)1952 (2)1954 (2)1958 (2)1959 (1)Service StatusAllIn Service (10)Retired (7)OperatorAllArgentine Armed Forces (1)Australian Defence Force (3)British Army (3)Canadian Armed Forces (2)Egyptian Armed Forces (1)French Armed Forces (1)Imperial Japanese Navy (1)Israeli Defense Forces (1)People's Liberation Army (1)Royal Air Force (4)Royal Navy (1)Soviet Armed Forces (1)Turkish Armed Forces (1)United States Armed Forces (2)United States Navy (1)Vietnam People's Army (1)ManufacturerAllAlvis Car and Engineering Company Ltd (1)Beretta (1)Birmingham Small Arms Company (2)Daimler Company (1)FN Herstal (1)Ishapore Rifle Factory (1)Kovrov Machine-Gun Factory (1)Lithgow Arms (1)London Small Arms Co.
