Fighting spread across a vast and shifting set of fronts, from Siberia under Admiral Alexander Kolchak to southern Russia under Anton Denikin and later Pyotr Wrangel, complicated further by foreign intervention from Britain, France, the United States, Japan and others in support of White forces, and by a parallel Polish-Soviet War in 1919 to 1921. Leon Trotsky's organization of the Red Army and the Bolsheviks' control of Russia's industrial heartland and rail network proved decisive advantages, and by 1920 the main White armies had been defeated, with mopping-up operations against remaining resistance, including in Central Asia and the Far East, continuing into 1923. The war killed millions through combat, disease and famine, and its Bolshevik victory secured the survival of Soviet Russia and established the political order that led to the founding of the Soviet Union in 1922.FactsRussian Civil WarConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsStart YearWell-attested1917 1End YearWell-attested1922 1CombatantsWell-attestedThe Bolshevik Red Army versus the anti-Bolshevik White movement, with foreign interventionist forces and various independence movements 1OutcomeWell-attestedBolshevik victory; establishment of the Soviet Union across most of the former Russian Empire 1ClassificationConflict TypeWell-attestedCivil War 1Russian Civil WarFilter Results20 entriesWeapon FamilyAllBolt-Action, Lever-Action and Historic Rifles (5)Fighter and Multirole Aircraft (1)Heavy Machine Guns (3)Light Machine Guns (4)Pistols and Revolvers (4)Revolvers (2)Rifles and Carbines (6)Semi-Automatic and Battle Rifles (1)Semi-Automatic Pistols (2)Semi-Automatic Pistols of Belgium (1)Semi-Automatic Pistols of Germany (1)Tanks (2)Weapon Type or ClassAllBiplane fighter aircraft (1)Bolt-action rifle (4)Bolt-action service rifle (1)Heavy machine gun (1)Heavy tank (first tank fielded in combat) (1)Light machine gun (4)Light tank (1)Machine gun (1)Recoil-operated machine gun (1)Revolver (1)Semi-automatic pistol (2)Semi-automatic rifle (1)seven-shot, gas-seal revolver (1)CaliberAll.30-06 Springfield (5).303 British (3).32 ACP (2).32 S&W (1).35 Remington (1).351 Winchester Self-Loading (1).38 S&W (1).44 Russian (1).44 S&W American (1).44-40 Winchester (1).45 Schofield (1)11x59mmR Gras (2)37mm (1)57mm (1)6.5x50mm (1)6.5x52mm Carcano (1)6.5x55mm (2)6.5×50mmSR Arisaka (2)6.5×53mmR (2)6.5×54mm Mannlicher-Schönauer (1)7.5×55mm Swiss (1)7.62x54mmR (4)7.65x53mm Argentine (3)7.7x56mmR (1)7.7x58mm (1)7.7×58mm Arisaka (1)7.92x57mm Mauser (5)7x57mm Mauser (3)8mm Lebel (2)8x50mmR Lebel (3)8x52mmR Mannlicher (1)8x56mmR Steyr (1)8x57 mm Patrone 88 (1)8×50mmR Mannlicher (3)8×56mmR (2)8×58mmR (1)9x19mm (1)Introduced EraAll1869 (1)1870 (1)1884 (1)1888 (1)1889 (1)1891 (1)1895 (1)1897 (1)1898 (1)1900 (1)1902 (1)1905 (1)1906 (1)1907 (2)1908 (1)1909 (1)1914 (2)1915 (2)1916 (1)1917 (2)Service StatusAllIn Service (4)Out of Production (1)Retired (16)OperatorAllArgentine Armed Forces (2)Austro-Hungarian Army (2)Brazilian Army (1)British Army (2)Canadian Army (1)Finnish Defence Forces (3)French Armed Forces (6)Imperial Japanese Army (2)Imperial Japanese Navy (1)Imperial Russian Army (3)Mexican Armed Forces (1)People's Liberation Army (1)Red Army (3)Royal Air Force (1)Soviet Armed Forces (1)Spanish Armed Forces (1)Turkish Armed Forces (1)United States Armed Forces (4)United States Army (1)United States Navy (2)Wehrmacht (2)ManufacturerAllArtillerie-Inrichtingen (1)Berliet (1)Birmingham Small Arms Company (1)Carl Gustafs stads gevärsfaktori (1)Colt's Manufacturing Company (1)Delaunay-Belleville (1)DISA A/S (1)Fabrique d'armes Émile et Léon Nagant (1)Fegyver- és Gépgyár (1)FN Herstal (1)German Arms and Ammunition Factory (1)Hotchkiss et Cie (2)Kalashnikov Concern (1)Krieghoff (1)Manufacture d'armes de Châtellerault (1)Mauser (2)Metro-Cammell (1)Remington Arms (1)Renault (1)Royal Prussian Rifle Factory Erfurt (1)Sauer & Sohn (1)Savage Arms (1)Sestroretsk arsenal (1)Simson (1)Smith & Wesson (1)Somua (1)Sopwith Aviation Company (1)Spandau Arsenal (1)Steyr Arms (2)Tula Arms Plant (1)Vickers (1)Waffenfabrik Bern (1)Westinghouse Electric Corporation (1)William Foster & Co.
