Russian Navy

Contemporary

The Russian Navy is the naval arm of the Russian Armed Forces. It has existed in various forms since 1696, when Peter the Great established the Imperial Russian Navy in October of that year, and its present iteration was formed in January 1992, succeeding the Navy of the Commonwealth of Independent States, which had itself succeeded the Soviet Navy. The St. Andrew's ensign and most of its traditions were established personally by Peter I. It possesses the vast majority of the former Soviet naval forces and comprises the Northern Fleet, the Pacific Fleet, the Black Sea Fleet, the Baltic Fleet, the Caspian Flotilla, the permanent task force in the Mediterranean, Naval Aviation and the Coastal Troops. It suffered severely after the Soviet collapse from insufficient maintenance and lack of funding, and a rise in gas and oil prices in 2013 enabled a renaissance.
