The Indian Navy is the maritime branch of the Indian Armed Forces, with the President of India as its Supreme Commander and a four-star Chief of Naval Staff in command. As a blue-water navy it operates significantly in the Persian Gulf region, the Horn of Africa and the Strait of Malacca, and routinely conducts anti-piracy operations with other navies in the region. Its origins date to 1612, when an English vessel under Captain Thomas Best defeated the Portuguese at the Battle of Swally, and when India became a republic on 26 January 1950 the Royal prefix was dropped and the name Indian Navy was officially adopted. Its primary objective is to safeguard the nation's maritime borders and to deter or defeat threats, in war and peace, and since October 2008 it has kept at least one frontline warship on continuous deployment in the Gulf of Aden.
