Cold War

Contemporary

The Cold War was a period of geopolitical rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies, the capitalist Western Bloc and the communist Eastern Bloc. It began in the aftermath of the Second World War and ended with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. It is called cold because the two superpowers never fought each other directly, although each supported opposing sides in regional conflicts known as proxy wars. The rivalry was also expressed as a struggle for ideological and economic influence, an arms race in conventional and nuclear weapons, the Space Race, espionage, propaganda campaigns, embargoes and sports diplomacy.
