Snider-Enfield

The Snider-Enfield, formally the British .577 Snider-Enfield, was a breech-loading rifle built around a breech action invented by the American Jacob Snider. It converted the British Army's existing Pattern 1853 Enfield muzzle-loading rifles into breechloaders and was adopted by the British Army in 1866. The British Army used it until 1880, when it was superseded by the Martini-Henry, while the British Indian Army kept the Snider-Enfield in service into the closing years of the nineteenth century.
