Yemeni Civil War

The Yemeni Civil War began in 2014, when Houthi rebels, drawing on longstanding grievances of Yemen's Zaidi Shia minority, seized the capital Sana'a and forced the internationally recognized government of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi into exile. A Saudi Arabia-led coalition intervened militarily in 2015 in support of Hadi's government, while the conflict fragmented further with the involvement of southern separatists and al-Qaeda-linked militants operating in parts of the country. The war produced one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, marked by blockade, famine and disease, and a fragile United Nations-brokered truce beginning in 2022 substantially reduced large-scale fighting even though a comprehensive political settlement between the warring Yemeni parties had not been reached as of this description.
