They are responsible for protecting the state borders and for land-based combat operations, and their main command is based in Moscow. The president of Russia is the Supreme Commander-in-Chief and appoints the Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces. The service dates its lineage back to 1550, but its current form was created in 1992 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, when Russia formed its own armed forces from the Soviet ones. Since then they have fought in both Chechen wars, and the Russo-Ukrainian War has seen them deployed against Ukraine on a large scale.FactsRussian Ground ForcesConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsForce TypeWell-attestedLand forces of the Russian Armed Forces 1Founded YearWell-attested1992 1CountryWell-attestedRussia 1Force TypeForce Type (category)Well-attestedArmy 1Russian Ground ForcesFilter Results9 entriesWeapon FamilyAllAnti-Tank Weapons and Mines (1)Ballistic Missiles (2)Ballistic Missiles of Russia and the Soviet Union (2)Light Machine Guns (1)Rifles and Carbines (1)Self-Propelled Artillery (2)Sniper, Designated Marksman and Anti-Materiel Rifles (1)Submachine Guns (1)Tanks (1)Weapon Type or ClassAll152.4mm self-propelled howitzer (1)Anti-tank rocket launcher (1)Light machine gun (1)Main battle tank (1)mobile short-range ballistic missile system (1)Self-propelled gun (1)Short-range ballistic missile system (1)small arm (1)Submachine gun (1)CaliberAll125mm (1)152mm (2)155mm (1)40mm (1)6.5x47mm Lapua (1)7.62x54mmR (1)9x19mm (1)9×19 mm Parabellum (1)Introduced EraAll1960 (1)1961 (1)1989 (1)1992 (1)2005 (1)2006 (3)2023 (1)Service StatusAllIn Service (8)Wars Used InAllEritrean-Ethiopian War (1)First Chechen War (1)Iran-Iraq War (1)Russo-Georgian War (2)Russo-Ukrainian War (5)Second Chechen War (2)Six-Day War (1)Syrian Civil War (4)Vietnam War (1)ManufacturerAllBurevestnik Central Scientific Research Institute (1)Heavy Vehicles Factory (1)KBP Instrument Design Bureau (1)Kovrov Machine-Gun Factory (1)Lobaev Arms (1)Omsktransmash (1)Uralvagonzavod (1)Votkinsk Machine Building Plant (2)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 92S19 Msta-SRussian Ground Forces2S35 Koalitsiya-SVRussian Ground Forces9K720 IskanderRussian Ground ForcesIskander MissileRussian Ground ForcesLobaev Sniper RifleRussian Ground ForcesPP-2000Russian Ground ForcesRPG-7Russian Ground ForcesT-90Russian Ground ForcesType 73 light machine gunRussian Ground ForcesConnectionsFought InFirst Chechen War, Wars Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Russian Ground Forcestier 4Russo-Ukrainian War, Wars Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Russian Ground Forcestier 4Second Chechen War, Wars Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Russian Ground Forcestier 4Operates2S19 Msta-S, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: 2S19 Msta-S2S35 Koalitsiya-SV, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV9K720 Iskander, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: 9K720 Iskandertier 2Iskander Missile, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: 9K720 Iskandertier 2Lobaev Sniper Rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Lobaev Sniper RiflePP-2000, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: PP-2000RPG-7, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: RPG-7tier 2T-90, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: T-90tier 2Type 73 light machine gun, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Type 73 light machine gunIn the Other AtlasesFound InRussiaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject is found.Sources1.
