It began in the aftermath of the Second World War and ended with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. It is called cold because the two superpowers never fought each other directly, although each supported opposing sides in regional conflicts known as proxy wars. The rivalry was also expressed as a struggle for ideological and economic influence, an arms race in conventional and nuclear weapons, the Space Race, espionage, propaganda campaigns, embargoes and sports diplomacy.FactsCold WarConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsEnd YearWell-attested1991 1Cold WarFilter Results17 entriesWeapon FamilyAllAir-to-Ground Missiles and Guided Bombs (1)Anti-Tank Weapons and Mines (1)Ballistic Missiles (5)Ballistic Missiles of Russia and the Soviet Union (4)Ballistic Missiles of the United States (1)Cruise Missiles (1)Land Mines (1)Nuclear Weapons and Strategic Bombs (1)Other Missiles and Guided Munitions (1)Pistols and Revolvers (1)Recoilless Guns and Rifles (1)Semi-Automatic Pistols (1)Semi-Automatic Pistols of Germany (1)Surface-to-Air and Air Defense Missiles (2)Tanks (1)Torpedoes (1)Weapon Type or ClassAllAir-to-ground strategic cruise missile (1)Deep-water anti-submarine naval mine (1)Directional fragmentation antipersonnel mine (1)guided missile (3)Heavy tank (1)Intercontinental ballistic missile (1)Man-portable anti-tank weapon (1)Mobile theater ballistic missile (1)Nuclear air-to-surface missile (1)Short-range ballistic missile (1)small arm (1)Surface-to-air missile (1)Surface-to-surface rocket (1)Tactical and strategic nuclear weapon (1)Tactical nuclear recoilless smoothbore gun (1)CaliberAll122mm (1)7.65×21mm Parabellum (1)9x19mm (1)9×19 mm Parabellum (1)9×21mm (1)Introduced EraAll1953 (1)1954 (1)1958 (2)1959 (2)1961 (1)1962 (1)1966 (1)1970 (1)1972 (1)1979 (2)1980 (1)1982 (1)1987 (1)1995 (1)Service StatusAllIn Service (5)Retired (12)OperatorAllBritish Army (2)Canadian Army (1)Royal Air Force (1)Royal Navy (1)Russian Armed Forces (2)Soviet Armed Forces (1)Strategic Rocket Forces (2)United States Air Force (1)United States Armed Forces (2)United States Army (2)United States Navy (1)ManufacturerAllAlliant Techsystems (1)Atomic Weapons Establishment (1)Bell Labs (1)Carl Walther GmbH (1)Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant (1)Douglas (2)Hercules Inc.
