The Canadian Armed Forces are the unified military forces of Canada, including sea, land, air and special operations forces commands referred to as the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Special Operations Forces Command. Under the National Defence Act they are an entity separate and distinct from the Department of National Defence, and the Governor General is their commander-in-chief. The current iteration dates from 1 February 1968, when the three services were merged into a unified structure; on 16 August 2011 the names of the three elemental commands were reverted to their historical predecessors while the unified structure was maintained. They are a professional volunteer force of approximately 100,000 personnel, split between about 68,000 active and 32,000 reserve personnel.
