Home›Weapons Systems›Wars Used In›Second Sino-Japanese WarWarSecond Sino-Japanese WarModernReference and ClassificationDevelopingThe Second Sino-Japanese War was fought from 1937 to 1945 between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan, growing out of decades of Japanese expansion into Chinese territory and merging into the wider Pacific theater of World War II after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. The war began in earnest with the Marco Polo Bridge Incident near Beijing in July 1937, followed by rapid Japanese advances that captured Shanghai, the Chinese capital Nanjing, where occupying forces perpetrated the mass atrocity known as the Nanjing Massacre, and much of eastern China by 1938. Chinese resistance, divided between the Nationalist government under Chiang Kai-shek and the Chinese Communist Party under Mao Zedong in an uneasy united front, fought a grinding war of attrition that tied down large Japanese forces for years even as front lines stabilized. Japan's surrender in August 1945, following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet declaration of war, ended the conflict, but China's civil war between the Nationalists and Communists, only briefly suspended for the united front, resumed almost immediately afterward.FactsSecond Sino-Japanese WarConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsStart YearWell-attested1937 1End YearWell-attested1945 1CombatantsWell-attestedRepublic of China, Nationalist and Communist forces in United Front, versus the Empire of Japan and its puppet states 1OutcomeWell-attestedChinese victory; China recovered territory lost to Japan and to Japanese puppet states 1ClassificationDeath Toll MinWell-attestedfrom 14,000,000 1Conflict TypeWell-attestedInterstate War 1Second Sino-Japanese WarFilter Results38 entriesWeapon FamilyAllAircraft Machine Guns (1)Ammunition and Cartridges (1)Anti-Tank Weapons and Mines (1)Armored Cars and Reconnaissance Vehicles (2)Bayonets (1)Bolt-Action, Lever-Action and Historic Rifles (9)Edged and Bladed Small Arms (1)Hand Grenades (1)Heavy Machine Guns (3)Light Machine Guns (9)Pistols and Revolvers (2)Rifles and Carbines (11)Semi-Automatic Pistols (2)Semi-Automatic Pistols of Europe (1)Semi-Automatic Pistols of Germany (1)Sniper, Designated Marksman and Anti-Materiel Rifles (2)Submachine Guns (3)Tanks (2)Weapon Type or ClassAllAircraft machine gun (1)anti-aircraft and anti-tank gun (1)Armored car (1)Armored car / Scout car (1)Automatic rifle (1)Bayonet (1)Bolt-action rifle (4)Bolt-action service rifle (1)Bolt-action, en-bloc clip-fed repeating rifle (1)Bolt-action, magazine-fed service rifle (1)Hand grenade (1)Heavy machine gun (2)Light cavalry tank (1)Light machine gun (5)Light tank (1)Machine gun (4)Semi-automatic pistol (1)small arm (7)Submachine gun (3)CaliberAll.30-06 Springfield (2).303 British (1).45 ACP (2).50 BMG (1)11x59mmR Gras (1)20 x 125 mm (1)20mm (1)20x124mm (1)45mm (1)6.5x50mm (6)6.5x52mm Carcano (1)6.5×50mmSR Arisaka (7)7.62x51mm NATO (1)7.62x54mmR (2)7.62×53mmR (1)7.63×25mm Mauser (1)7.7x56mmR (1)7.7x58mm (5)7.7×58mm Arisaka (2)7.92x57mm Mauser (7)7x57mm Mauser (4)88mm (1)8x50mmR Lebel (2)9x19mm (4)9x23mm (3)9×19 mm Parabellum (1)Introduced EraAll1888 (1)1891 (2)1895 (1)1897 (3)1899 (1)1905 (1)1906 (1)1908 (2)1912 (1)1914 (1)1915 (1)1918 (3)1922 (2)1924 (2)1927 (1)1928 (1)1930 (2)1932 (2)1934 (1)1935 (1)1936 (2)1937 (3)1939 (3)1941 (2)Service StatusAllIn Service (6)Out of Production (1)Retired (31)OperatorAllAustralian Defence Force (1)Brazilian Army (2)Canadian Armed Forces (1)Finnish Defence Forces (5)French Armed Forces (5)Imperial Japanese Army (13)Imperial Japanese Navy (4)Luftwaffe (1)People's Liberation Army (4)Red Army (2)Spanish Armed Forces (2)Turkish Armed Forces (1)United States Armed Forces (1)United States Army (1)United States Marine Corps (1)Wehrmacht (11)ManufacturerAllAnciens Etablissements Pieper (2)Astra-Unceta y Cia SA (1)Auto Union (1)Beretta (1)Brescia Arsenal (1)C.
