The Armed Forces of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, also known as the Red Army from 1918 to 1946 and the Soviet Army from 1946 to 1991, were the armed forces of the Russian SFSR and then the Soviet Union, from their beginnings in the Russian Civil War of 1917 to 1923 to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The official Red Army Day of 23 February 1918 marked the first mass draft of the Red Army in Petrograd and Moscow and the first combat action against the advancing Imperial German Army. Under the all-union military service law of September 1925 they consisted of the Red Army, the Air Forces, the Navy, the troops of the Joint State Political Directorate and the convoy guards of the union-republic NKVDs. In May 1992 Russian president Boris Yeltsin issued decrees forming the Russian Armed Forces, which subsumed much of them.
